Conscious Impact: Week Five

Classic Loving-Kindness Meditation

This meditation is a classic loving-kindness (mettā) mindfulness meditation. It can feel awkward or artificial in the beginning, but I encourage you to stick with it.  In this case, you’re allowed to fake it ’til you make it. Many people have told me that this meditation was a guiding light in dark times. I also find it very effective when I am stuck in ‘othering’ or when something terrible happens somewhere and I can’t do anything about it at the time. Sending a message of universal goodwill is at least one thing we can always do.

If you can, I recommend that you sit on a chair or on a cushion with your hips higher than your knees. Balancing your spine freely without support will help you stay alert. However, if this position creates too much tension in your body, you can try to lie down or lean your back against a wall or chair. Turn off your devices and if needed, let other people know not to disturb you during the next thirty minutes.
